Your temporomandibular joints, also known as TMJ’s are located on each side of your face. The joint includes muscles and ligaments deep into the jawbone and also includes a ball and socket that works to open and close your mouth as you talk, eat, or move your jaw in any way. Oftentimes, this joint can become sore and tight when you first wake up or try to eat and talk. Temporomandibular joint disorder, also known as TMD, is a condition that inflames this joint and causes extreme pain.

There are many causes of TMD, such as arthritis, injuries, tooth alignment, jaw alignment, stress, teeth grinding while you sleep, and the dislocation of the jaw. The first step to overcoming this condition is always to seek diagnosis, so your dentist can help you find the right treatment for your unique needs.
